Term Time Absence


Amendments to the 2006 regulations on school attendance have been made and have come into force from 1st September 2013.


The regulations remove references to family holidays and extended leave as well as the statutory threshold of ten school days.


The amendments make clear that Headteachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances.


This encompasses, for example, the loss of a family member or leave from the services. These regulations apply to all leave of absence including holidays.

Penalty notices for unauthorised absence

You could be issued with a penalty notice if your child is absent from school without permission. The penalty is £60, rising to £120 if paid after 21 days but within 28 days. If you fail to pay a penalty fine within 42 days you can be prosecuted.
